The musculoskeletal system is formed through the connection of bones, ligaments, cartilage, muscle, and tendons. Each of these structures, however, is susceptible to injury or diseases. Our physical therapists use a wide variety of treatments to manage these problems. Here you will learn more about the common medical conditions that are treated, as well as rehabilitation techniques specific to each disorder.

LOW BACK PAIN
It’s a known fact that low back pain and headaches are the two most common complaints in our society today. Also another fact---65 million Americans experience low back pain every year.

Low back painWhile four out of five adults will experience at least one episode of low back pain at some point of their lives, you can be the one who does not.

Pain in the back can occur at anytime for no apparent reason. Your low back may take more of your body weight then it should due to poor leg strength and most importantly poor posture. A condition you may not even know.

Your back is an intricate balance of muscles--7 layers to be exact of ligament and nerves, not to mention bones. All this works together to balance ADL's (Activities of Daily Living).

The curvature helps support this balance, as it acts like a shock absorber. Poor muscle tone, poor posture and other factors attribute to this condition.

Some of the more direct causes, secondary to the above, is:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Herniated Disc
  • Nerve Impingement
  • Fibromyalgia

Although it may take several weeks for back pain to completely go away, the American Medical Association recommends seeing a Physician or Physical Therapist if the pain persists more then 72 hours.

If the pain is as follows you should seek medical attention:

  • You have low back pain associated with a fever
  • Your pain is greater at night
  • The pain goes down your legs
  • The pain causes weakness or numbness
  • Abdominal or bowel / bladder dysfunction

As we move on and have now totally scared you, lets talk about the treatment to help remedy the condition. There are medications that can be prescribed but they are a cover up.

We suggest exercising regularly. If your not sure of the proper mechanics ask someone on staff who knows the facts on how to execute the exercises. There are also Physical Therapy agents like heat or ice pending cause, ultrasound, electric stimulation, massage and even traction.

Since your abdominals and back work together almost like a natural corset, conditioning your body is perhaps the most important prevention and cure.

Knowledge is prevention
